When talking about Google and Microsoft, I am only one of their millions end users of their products or service. Nokia is different and special to me as it was one part of my life.
Nokia is the pride of Finland. Like the car of Germany, the watch of Switzerland and the leather products of Italy, Nokia is the symbol of Finland. Nokia started its business since 1865. It used to produce tire, footwear, cables pr some other rubber or paper products. Only in 1990s, Nokia seized great chance of mobile industry and leaped itself as a giant only within a few years.
One might agree with me that Nokia is elegant because its stylish design and well made commercials. What I really want to mention is the essence of its culture.
Nokia is a company which emphasizes training very much. There are lots of trainings about profession, management or company strategies. One of the most common topics between managers and their subordinates are developing the personal career plan and planning the trainings. The culture with strong training focus might relate to the Finnish excellent education tradition. Finland is a well known country with good education. They are No.1 in PISA ranking, No.13 in HDI ranking. In 2005-2006, they ranked No.1 in Global Growth Competitiveness Index Ranking. It is not hard to say that the competition among countries or among companies are the competition among human performance.
It has been 3 years since I left Nokia. Now I still remember that in 2000 when I started working in Nokia, I was taught the core Nokia Values: Customer Satisfaction, Respect, Achievement, Renewal. In that training course, we intensively discussed who is your customer. It could be your boss, your subordinates, your colleagues in any department, our business partners from other company or end users of Nokia phones. You have the responsibility to make them happy, satisfied with your service. That is the routine principle for every Nokia employees. With that, there are few troubles when you cooperate with others but lots of fun.
As everybody see others as your customer, the collaboration and relationships among people are so important. Teamwork and achievement of a team is more important in Nokia. In Nokia, you might not know who is the best engineer. You know which team is the greatest team. The big team, Nokia, is stronger and more competitive because of the team building activities, Nokia Way as well as the New Year’s party every year.
From 2000 to 2003, I have been to Finland four times in different cities: capital city Helsinki, Nokia HQ Espoo, Nokia factory Salo. Every time I went there, I learned more about that country and that company. In June 2003, it was my first time and last time to do a presentation in front of the top management team, Jorma Ollila and his team. After presentation, Jorma Ollila shook hands to everybody of our team and thanked us for all our efforts to the project. That moment I could not forget.
